Wavefront technology

Wavefront technology was originally developed to help reduce the distortion one might see when viewing objects positioned in outer space, but today it is revolutionizing the refractive surgery industry. Wavefront allows for a complete, personalized measurement of the entire visual system, including the eye's shape, lens shape, cornea shape, depth of the eye, and the most accurate identification possible of anatomic anomalies that could cause vision conditions such as impaired night vision or presence of halos. Wavefront™ LASIK technology in Sacramento at Newman LASIK Center is a superior method of vision correction because it can fix lower and higher-order aberrations in the eye such as halos and glare. These vision impairments can only be detected and improved with Wavefront™ LASIK technology. Wavefront LASIK is a variation of the traditional procedure and produces a spatially varying correction based on readings from a wavefront sensor. A wavefront sensor measures the eye itself by detecting any aberrations on the cornea.

Wavefront technology is able to map the surface of your eye and determine the right amount of refractive correction for your eyes. Rather than the "one size fits all" approach of traditional LASIK, Wavefront LASIK offers customized treatment for the best vision results. Wavefront technology was initially developed under the guidance of NASA and was applied to astronomy and physics to aid in reducing aberrations or imperfections in the optical systems of telescopes and laser devices. This technology was then tested, researched and applied to optical imperfections of the human eye. Wavefront-guided PRK offers additional vision correction, similar to wavefront-guided LASIK. Though thousands of wavefront-guided PRK procedures have been safely and effectively performed in the United States, the FDA approval process has not yet taken place, so wavefront-guided PRK is considered an ?off-label?

Wavefront technology was developed in astronomy. Using wavefront measurements, imperfections in the lenses and mirrors of astronomic telescopes are detected and measured. Wavefront was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions in space. First, a narrow ray of eye-safe infrared laser light is passed into the eye and directed to the retina. Wavefront is actually used in two separate ophthalmic events. The first is a wavefront evaluation and diagnosis of existing aberrations.

Wavefront™ technology was originally developed for use in astronomy. In the 1900s, astrophysicist Johannes Hartmann developed a simple method, dubbed the Hartmann test, to measure the imperfections of mirrors and lenses. Wavefront technology is utilized to provide a mapping of one's unique characteristics of their eye, much like a fingerprint. This technology was adapted from astronomy 25 years ago to look at distant stars traveling the atmosphere. WaveScan evaluates more than nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism; it captures other, more specific imperfections in each individual's vision. This data is then used to generate an individualized treatment for a CustomVue procedure.

Wavefront measurements are more precise; it uses 1/100 Diopter steps and is independent of the patient?s subjective response. Wavefront laser vision correction is an advanced form of excimer laser technology. Just like a fingerprint, each person's vision is unique to them. Wavefront LASIK is more precisely designed to enhance the quality of your vision. Our doctors will advise you about the best choice of our three FDA approved excimer lasers to help you to achieve the optimum results for your LASIK procedure.
