Saline implants have a silicone outer envelope and are filled with salt water. The FDA required studies of local complications, such as pain, infection, hardening, and the need for additional surgery. Saline doesn't have the same density as tissue so the weight feels different for the size. They can make it harder to sleep on your stomach and they often feel cold. Saline-filled implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline). Silicone-filled implants are silicone shells filled with a plastic gel (silicone).

Saline breast implants have been considered advantageous because if ruptured, the saline can be easily dissolved by the body. A disadvantage is that saline implants are more likely to show ripples through the skin. Saline breast implants and silicone breast implants come in a variety of shapes, surface textures, and sizes. Depending on the desired shape you wish to achieve, you and your local plastic surgeon may choose a round or shaped implant.

Silicone implants have received a great deal of media attention in recent year, with some reports of unsafe or dangerous side effects. In 1998, the government commissioned an Independent Review Group (1) to look at the available evidence about the risks of silicone breast implants and publish a report based on its findings. Silicone gel implants, like any other medical product, cannot be approved until those studies are submitted and reviewed by the FDA. This decision is not made on the basis of physicians' or patients' opinions, or research on implants that are no longer on the market. Silicone implants recently had been banned from the market and I knew that they were not safe but the new and improved saline implants were safe!

Silicone-gel implants are not approved for marketing and are available to women only through FDA-approved clinical studies. Silicone breast implants, available to consumers in most other countries, were driven from the market after a campaign of speculation and misinformation by trial lawyers and allied "consumer" groups, particularly Dr. The campaign resulted in billions in legal settlements over nonexistent autoimmune effects from the devices, none of which had to be repaid even after more careful scientific studies dispelled the early alarms.
