Senator Edward Kennedy (26 Aug 2009)
Senator Kennedy is a complex, intelligent person who has stood up for himself, his family and his country. I admire him for those reasons. Senate was mishandled , one final ungraceful note is striking particularly close to home. Kennedy tell TIME that his circle is furious that his brain cancer has been cited by some in her camp as the reason for her decision to withdraw her name from consideration for the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton in New York. Senator Kennedy was my hero and an inspiration in every sense of the word. I was proud to call him my Senator, and I am as grief-stricken as I would be if I lost a member of my own family.

Learn about Kenya. (19 Aug 2009)
Kenya is not Rwanda, and reports of a "majority" and "minority" tribe engaged in a struggle to the death are widely off the mark. In reality, all of Kenya's leaders know that in order to govern the country they must put together a coalition of interest groups from many regions. Kenya is situated right along the equator, on the eastern coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is on the southeast, and to the east lies Somalia. Kenya is located in the eastern part of Africa. It has an area of about 150,000 square kilometers.

Jomo Kenyatta (18 Aug 2009)
Kenya's capital city Nairobi is host to a mix of people, places and sights that could easily entice any traveler. Most travelers end up booking flights to Nairobi as a stop on their way to a Kenya safari. Kenyatta guided his nation for fourteen years. Although there were several scandals, and he was supposed to have amassed a large fortune, the people of Kenya remained loyal to him and grateful for the lifetime of devotion he had given to the cause of their freedom. Kenya, for its part, had forty different tribes that spoke various dialects, which would have to be amalgamated into a nation with a common identity upon gaining independence. Israel's advice could be helpful in avoiding mistakes.

Israel and apartheid (13 Aug 2009)
Israel remains the belligerent occupant of the OPT as they are territories over which Israel does not possess sovereignty but only a temporary right of administration. Consequently, Israel must abide by the relevant rules of the law of armed conflict—principally the provisions of the Hague Regulations of 1907 and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949—in its administration of the territories. Israel would be under no obligation to grant them citizenship, just as Israelis living in Palestine (Jews who choose to remain in Maaleh Adumim or Hebron, for example, former 'settlers') would retain Israeli citizenship. This addresses Israeli concerns about the integrity of their state. Israel is building what it calls a security wall between the West Bank and Israel. Not only that, it weaves its way through Palestinian farms, separating farmers from their land.

Is Apartheid over? (13 Aug 2009)
Apartheid is between people, and now I am not speaking about race/color I am talking about society in general. For instance, the rich and the poor don't live next to one another. Apartheid is a policy of racial segregation maintained in South Africa from 1948 to 1991. The policy established the doctrine of 'separate development' whereby South African blacks were segregated into reserves known as 'homelands' and subjected to residential and occupational restrictions. Apartheid is a cultural thing. According to a CBS news report delivered by Dan Rather, it only appears inhumane to our "Western eyes.".If we understood the culture of the country that has instituted apartheid, we would realize that apartheid is not about a dominant group exerting control, perpetuating inequality, and disempowering another group.
Apartheid (13 Aug 2009)
Apartheid has also been labeled a war crime in international conflicts under Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions. Protocol I lists as grave breaches apartheid "and other inhuman and degrading practices involving outrages upon personal dignity, based on racial discrimination," though these would only be grave breaches during international armed conflict. Apartheid in America ended after the 1960s riots; in South Africa after the Sowet riots, not because of any epithany on the part of the oppressors. These riots threatened the whole economic structure of the oppressors plus enlisted the disapproval of the whole world. Apartheid South Africa was based on an "us here, them there" formula of territorial segregation in which the white-ruled areas consisted of 87 percent of the country, including the big cities and most of the arable land. Nominally independent bantustans, forming a horseshoe-shaped archipelago along the nation's outskirts, made up the remaining 13 percent of the land.
Steve Biko (13 Aug 2009)
Steve Biko, an icon in the anti-apartheid movement, died in the custody of security police on 12 September 1977. He was arrested and held in Port Elizabeth for interrogation - then carted 1 200km to Pretoria, naked in the back of a Land Rover. Steve Biko was born on 18 December 1946 just months before the racist National Party, which introduced apartheid in South Africa, came to power. His father died when he was four and his mother worked as a domestic servant for white families in King William's Town in Cape Province. Steve Biko's importance for informal and community educators lies in the emphasis he placed on the role played by consciousness and awareness-raising in his work as a black activist. Like Marx in the Nineteenth Century, Biko thought that only the oppressed could liberate themselves, no one could do it for them.
