DESIGN (08 Aug 2009)
DESIGN is not a democracy. Democracies are fine, mainly for collecting diverse input. Design is nothing more than the wrapper used to contain and convey effective communication. Thus, design cannot die unless communication dies first. Design is a verb first. It is an activity that, when at its best, involves a feedback loop between the person and the activity itself; the incarnation of "fail often, fail early".

Ferris spans four decades. In the 1960s, he began documenting African American traditional arts in his home state of Mississippi. Ferris, the promise of his wheel has never quite died. Maybe it was something about the new millennium that made us want to reinvent the wheel, maybe it was the innovation of the "observation wheel" that increased rider capacity to as many as 2,000 passengers at once. Ferris's interest in 17th-century music deepened and he became a devoted exponent of the music of Heinrich Schotz, paving the way for a citywide burst of interest in Schotz's music. He programmed Schotz's works during his five years as music director of Cantata Singers, and gave two noteworthy Schotz concerts with the Harvard University Choir in 1972.
Globalisation (22 Aug 2009)
Globalisation is going to continue to push us to improve productivity and carve out our specialisations and comparative advantages in the global economy. Those specialisations should be based on the high levels of value-added we bring to what we produce. Globalisation has transformed the way in which dominant forces in the global economy have defined their interests in the world outside of their own home base. In earlier economic phases, these forces were focused on ensuring access to cheap raw materials in the periphery as well as whatever access they could get to foreign commodity markets that was compatible with ensuring protected access r their economies at home. Globalisation produces new opportunities and threats, and it creates a new framework for foreign policy. With new communication channels, trade and investment intensity has increased.

Kenya (29 Jul 2009)
Kenya Railways is operating under a long-term management concession, and the government sold 25% of Safaricom (10 billion shares) in 2008, reducing its share to 35%. Accelerating growth to achieve Kenya's potential and reduce the poverty that afflicts about 46% of its population will require continued de-regulation of business, improved delivery of government services, addressing structural reforms, massive investment in new infrastructure (especially roads), reduction of chronic insecurity caused by crime, and improved economic governance generally. Kenya requires travelers arriving from countries where yellow fever is present to present proof of yellow fever vaccination. Vaccination should be given 10 days before travel and at 10-year intervals if there is ongoing risk. Kenya is trying to lead the way. Over the years, the Tanganyikans increased their role in their government and finally established self-government that led to their independence from Great Britain in 1961.

twitter, twittering (09 Aug 2009)
Twitter is a popular "micro-blogging" service that allows you to send updates (up to 140 characters in length) via SMS, IM, the website, and third-party applications . It also has a handy feature which allows you to send direct (private) messages to your friends on Twitter. Twitterific is still my favorite way to read tweets even though it isn't nearly as robust as Twhirl. I like the way it looks, I like how simple it is and I like the ease with which it allow direct messaging and replies (because it accepts keyboard commands for those). Twitter told us the story of Neda's supreme sacrifice. It is telling the story of the Iranian people yearning to breathe free.

Zanzibari presidential elections went forward as scheduled. Although there were many administrative improvements over the 2000 elections in Zanzibar, the poll was marred by violence and intimidation. Zanzibar was stuck with its British stiff upper lip for another two years, after which the mainland forged a union together with Zanzibar and the nearby island of Pemba. Zanzibar's spices attracted ships from as far away as the United States. The United Kingdom's early interest in Zanzibar was motivated by both commerce and the determination to end the slave trade.
