Liver cancer relates to (correlates with) the frequency of chronic hepatitis B virus infection. Studies in animals also have provided that hepatitis B virus can cause liver cancer. Liver cancer is mostly observed in men. Higher rate of liver cancer is seen in individuals above 40 years of age. Liver cancer is an abnormal growth of tissue in the liver. The liver is an organ on the upper right part of the abdomen (stomach), just below the right lung and behind the ribs.

Liver cancer is a well-known condition that is less common in the United States than in Africa and East Asia. Approximately 21,370 Americans will be diagnosed with liver cancer in 2008, according to the American Cancer Society. Liver cancer occurs more frequently in males than females by a ratio of 2:1. The two main types of liver cancer are hepatocellular and cholangiocarcinoma. Liver cancer may even return after a new liver is transplanted.

Liver cancer is much more prevalent in many of the developing countries than in the industrialized world. Japan is the exception of the industrialized countries. Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) is a cancer arising from the liver. It is also known as primary liver cancer or hepatoma. Liver cancer is the most common organ malignancy worldwide and generally carries a poor prognosis. Surgical resection - 'removing the cancerous portion of the liver', is considered the best hope for a cure.

Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world and the third-biggest killer. Rates in the United States are lower than those in other countries but are rising rapidly, in part due to high hepatitis C infection rates during the 1970s from blood transfusions and IV drug abuse. Liver cancer can begin in the cells of the liver itself (primary liver cancer) or spread to the liver from other parts of your body (metastastic cancer). The most common form of primary liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which starts in the cells that filter toxins from your blood. Liver cancer can develop after many years of infection with the viruses.

Liver cancer causes death more often than many other tumors, not least because patients are usually diagnosed too late. It is thus the third most common cause of death by cancer. Liver cancer is the growth of cancer cells in the liver. Liver cancer may be discovered in a routine checkup if the doctor feels hard lumps in the abdomen, or incidentally by imaging studies. To confirm a diagnosis of liver cancer, doctors would use blood tests; ultrasound; computer tomography (CT) scans; and magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI.

Liver cancer usually has no symptoms in its early stages. Later symptoms can include pain in the abdomen, fever, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) and weight loss. Liver cancer rates are highest among Asians and Pacific Islanders, most likely because of higher prevalence of viral Hepatitis infection. At this time, we do not know exactly what causes cancer of the liver. Liver cancer is much more common in other areas of the world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia . Worldwide, liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer with a half a million people afflicted each year.

Liver cancer is the 3rd leading sites for both sexes. It rank 2nd among males and 9th among females. Liver cancer is relatively rare, known risk factors for liver cancer are prior hepatitis B or C infections or cirrhosis of the liver. There are two main types of liver cancer in adults: hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Liver cancer can develop after many years of infection with the virus.

Liver cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. While the molecular pathogenesis of liver cancer has been extensively studied, less is known about how the molecular biology of liver cancer influences clinical outcome and treatment response. Liver cancer is more common in men than in women. Liver cancer rates are highest among Asians and Pacific Islanders, most likely because of higher prevalence of viral Hepatitis infection.
