Insomniacs are not looking to discover their inner Chopins; they just want to get seven hours of sleep without a drug that can turn them into binge-eaters. Perhaps baseball fans could specify that their notes be played on a stadium organ. Insomnia is a message that your body sends to let you know that something is off or out of balance. Certain medications or an underlying illness may be the cause. Insomnia can be a serious problem for some people, and there are lots of reasons and causes of it. For decades scientists have been studying the influence of such factor as heredity on insomnia or other sleep disorders, and a great deal of the specialists have been trying to find out the connection between parental insomnia and sleep patterns of the children.
Insomnia becomes more common as people grow older, and is also more common in women. Insomnia , the inability to sleep , is all too common in our society. Many people have transient sleep disturbances and treat them with over-the-counter medications, while others turn to their healthcare provider for prescription medications - and there are plenty of choices for medications. Insomnia therapy at the doctor's office is often a sleep aid in the form of medication. While these medicines can often treat insomnia in the short term, they don't address the underlying causes of the sleeplessness.
Insomnia can be a disorder in its own right, but often it is a symptom of some other disease or condition. Half of all those who have experienced insomnia blame the problem on stress and worry. Insomnia is more common in women and older adults. People who are divorced, widowed, or separated are more likely to have the problem than those who are married, and it is more frequently reported by those of lower socioeconomic status. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the United States, experienced by approximately one-third of the adult population at some point. It is a persistent problem in ten percent, and this group requires the greatest support.
Insomniacs have statistically more visits to the doctor, more hospitalization, more accidents on the job and on the road. It's impossible to function when you're getting less sleep than you need over a long period of time. Insomnia can be described as either transient, short-term or long-term. Transient insomnia lasts for only a few nights. Insomnia is everywhere in the industrialized world. A recently published survey indicates that insomnia afflicts slightly more than 27 percent of adults in the United States (Leger D et al 2005).
Insomnia is not a disease, and no test can diagnose it. But when you can't sleep well, it often has to do with some other cause. Insomnia also varies in how long it lasts and how often it occurs. It can be short-term (acute insomnia) or can last a long time (chronic insomnia). Insomnia is very common in psychological conditions such as depression or anxiety. A sudden unexpected stressor such as a job loss or death in the family may also cause sleepless nights.
Insomnia is a common sleep problem that can affect your quality of life. People with insomnia have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Insomnia complaints can even result from such serious problems as repeated failure to breathe, seizures and other disorders .and sleeping pills make some of these underlying causes worse. Insomnia can become serious. It can make you feel less able to do your work and can make you feel tense and anxious.
Insomnia can be classified as transient, intermittent and chronic. Insomnia lasting from a single night to a few weeks is referred to as transient.
