Down syndrome Down Syndrome genotype affects a toddler's response threshold and intensity . Because of a muted response to stimuli, infants with Down syndrome can appear less volatile and fearful than other babies, and often exhibit less anxiety upon being separated from their mothers. Down syndrome is also associated with a number of major malformations. For example, approximately a half of Down syndrome children are born with a heart defect, most often a hole between the two sides of the heart. Down syndrome is the most common clinical cause of mental retardation in the world. It occurs once in every 1,500-2,000 births when the mother's age is below 25; one in every 400 births when the mother's age is over 35; once in every 40 births when the mother's age is over 45. Down syndrome is typically caused by what is called nondisjunction. If a pair of number 21 chromosomes fails to separate during the formation of an egg (or sperm), this is referred to as nondisjunction. Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 inside each of the body's cells. The extra chromosome causes certain physical characteristics (appearance) and affects intellectual development (thinking skills). Down syndrome decreases prenatal viability and increases prenatal and postnatal morbidity. Affected children have delays in physical growth, maturation, bone development, and dental eruption. Down syndrome is a set of physical and mental traits caused by a gene problem that happens before birth. Children with Down syndrome tend to have certain features, such as a flat face and a short neck. Down syndrome (trisomy 21) is the most commonly recognized genetic cause of mental retardation. The risk of trisomy 21 is directly related to maternal age. Down Syndrome Ireland is happy to acknowledge the release of an exclusive CD collection of music greats. The CD features the work and talent of Karen Plewman a renowned and established musician and singer. Down syndrome is relatively well known, with distinctive characteristics such as mental retardation , distinguishing facial features, and other traits. In the United States, Down syndrome occurs in 1 in 800 live births, and approximately 6000 children are born with Down syndrome each year. Down syndrome is usually caused by an error in cell division called nondisjunction. It is not known why this occurs. Down syndrome occurs when some or all of a person's cells have an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. The exact reason why this occurs is not yet known. Down syndrome occurs once in every 733 live births, making it the most commonly-occurring chromosomal condition. It is believed that between 5 percent and 10 percent of those born with Down syndrome also fall somewhere on the autistic spectrum. Down syndrome can be detected in a fetus in the first few months of pregnancy by examination of the chromosomes obtained by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. The parents of a child with Down syndrome are at increased risk for having another child with Down syndrome. Down syndrome affects kids' ability to learn in different ways, but most have mild to moderate intellectual impairment. Kids with DS can and do learn, and are capable of developing skills throughout their lives. Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. Down syndrome is the most common and readily identifiable chromosomal condition associated with intellectual disability. It is caused by a chromosomal abnormality: for some unexplained reason, an accident in cell development results in 47 instead of the usual 46 chromosomes.
