Allergies are often the unsuspected cause of headaches. The foods to which some people are allergic and which can trigger headaches are milk and milk products, chocolate, chicken, liver, alcohol and strong cheese. Allergies can also be closely associated with asthma. Allergies are the most common cause of chronic sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis can persist even after antibiotics are given. Allergies, sinus dizziness are associated with sinus problems. The symptoms of these allergies are very common such as runny nose, excessive sneezing, sore throat, watery eyes, bad breath and itching nose. Allergies cause symptoms such as sinus congestion, which can lead to headache pain. If you have allergies, the treatment for your allergy can relieve your allergy symptoms, but it may not help with your headache pain. Decongestant medications can be used to relieve headaches associated with sinus infections. Decongestants help relieve headache symptoms because they constrict blood vessels that cause headache pain. Decongestants are used to reduce inflammation and relieve sinus symptoms; these come in nasal (for example, oxymetazoline, pheylephrine, and xylometazoline) or oral (namely, pseudoephedrine, phenylpropanolamine) forms. The problem with nasal sprays is that they can promote dependency and "rebound" congestion (congestion that worsens if the spray is used for a prolonged period of time); therefore, nasal decongestants should not be used for longer than 3 to 5 days in a row, unless specifically instructed by your doctor. Treating chronic sinusitis may take longer, usually 3 to 4 weeks. Treating the inflammation involves anything from using a humidifier (see section entitled Lifestyle) to taking medicines to surgically drain of the mucous in the sinuses. Relaxation techniques (see Mind/Body Medicine) may be helpful for headaches in general. Treatment includes changes in a person's lifestyle. For example, a doctor may suggest that migraine patients alter their sleep or eating routines. Treatment goals are to get rid of any infection you might have and to improve drainage. Using a vaporizer or inhaler can help shrink swollen passages and promote drainage. Treatment of sinus headache is usually . Herbal remedies have been useful since the beginning of time. Many people specialize in knowing what herbs can be used for what illness. Herbs such as lavender, gingko biloba and feverfew may relieve headache pain. Feverfew should not be taken when pregnant. Herbs that 'Release the Exterior' are employed in clinic for immediate relief of allergies. Our Evil Airborne Warrior is a classic formula utilized for seasonal allergies, or hay fever. Medication can sometimes alleviate the symptoms, but will not eliminate the nerve irritation that is causing the malfunction of the sinuses. Medication to cure a sinus headache must be aimed at normalizing the sinus along with something to reduce the headache. Once your sinus problem is solved the headache will go away. Medicare covers 85% of the cost. Medical management for turbinate congestion often helps and includes oral decongestants and over the counter decongesting nasal sprays (Afrin™ or neosynephrine). However, caution must be used with these decongesting nasal sprays because they can often make the symptoms worse by causing more congestion after the medication wears off. Nasal irrigation often helped remove the offending secretions before asthma was experienced. Nasal irrigator or saline water syringe can be used to clear the nasal congestion. Stress can lead to habits like blowing the nose forcefully and rubbing it frequently. These habits may irritate the nose causing inflammation and even bleeding. Stress and anxiety are causes for tension headaches. The moment such a person gets tense about something, the person develops a tension headache. Tension headaches can usually be relieved with over the counter medications and de-stressing activities like a warm bath or a massage. Sinus headaches need to also be treated at the core of the problem, which, in this case, is congested and possibly infected sinus cavities. Tension headaches usually aren't debilitating, but they're certainly annoying (and ubiquitous). Fatigue and depression are also possible causes. Tension-type headaches can be subdivided into episodic and chronic. Episodic is recurrent and mild and commonly relieved by over-the-counter analgesics. Migraines are classified as either "with aura" or "without aura.".An aura is a group of neurological symptoms, usually vision disturbances that serve as warning sign. Patients who get auras typically see a flash of brightly colored or blinking lights shortly before the headache pain begins. Migraine headache alone directly affects about 12% of the population and the cause of a migraine headache is still a mystery to the medical profession. The symptoms and pain associated with the various types of headache, including cluster headaches, can be difficult for your doctor to pinpoint. Migraines and sinus headaches share common symptoms. However, migraines often have additional symptoms, including throbbing pain, nausea and sensitivity to light and noise. Migraine sufferers have long been cautioned to avoid certain foods believed to bring on attacks, especially chocolate, alcohol (red wine in particular) and aged cheese. But the evidence supporting this notion is meager. Migraine headaches occur sometimes due to great mental tension and stress.
