Cricket is the closest thing to a universal religion in a diverse nation that is home to a sixth of the world's population. Until the Indian TV market opened to private broadcasters in the early 1990s, however, its potential was untapped. Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport that is first documented as being played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, cricket had developed to the point where it had become the national sport of England. Cricket is still stuck in some pre-colonial time (as I come from a former colony…a-hem!) Cricket needs a serious shot in the arm. It's too elitist (though some Asians would not concur with this).
Cricket is tightly in the grip of commerce in the sense that it has lost the sense of existing for any other purpose. The priorities of business can be witnessed in the supersaturation point reached by international competition: television demands a constant supply of new, live product, good or not. Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world, but the basic rules of cricket can seem complicated to those unfamiliar with it. In fact, cricket's rules are not as difficult to understand as they may seem at first. Cricket is a bat and ball sport played between two teams, usually of eleven players each. A cricket match is played on a grass field, in the centre of which is a flat strip of ground 22 yards (20.12 m) long, called a pitch.
Cricket is played on a field, but a "pitch" is not a pitch, but a "bowl". The ball is not thrown, but "bowled" overhand to a "batsman" or "striker", not a batter. Cricket is more than our national pastime. It claims a higher loss of social time than strikes and lockouts do in industry. Cricket is also the most transformed sport amongst the youth and matches the population demographics very closely. The representation in the Proteas squad shows how much the game has transformed in recent years.
Cricket is one of the most popular sports played over the Australian summer. Although cricket is not a contact sport, injuries can and do occur, often due to overuse. Cricket is a game which has attained the status of religion in some parts of the world, particularly Indian subcontinent. The people here are much more than fans -of cricket.
Teams nearly always include a specialist wicket-keeper because of the importance of this fielding position. Each team is headed by a captain, who is responsible for making tactical decisions such as determining the batting order, the placement of fielders and the rotation of bowlers. Teams score runs by advancing on the bases, and the team that scores the most runs wins the game.
Test cricket is almost always played as a series of matches between two countries, with all matches in the series taking place in the same country (the host). The number of matches in a series varies from one to six. Test cricket has its charm and so is One-Dayers. In the One-Dayers, you always have time to make a come back, even if you don't get a very good start, and you can get into the game again. Test cricket is worth saving. It is the highest form of the game, a cricketing equivalent of classical music.
Test cricket is my main course, with all the meat and vegetables, and then it is nice to have Twenty20 as a dessert," Tendulkar said. Test match cricket is a joy to watch. The recent revival of interest in test cricket with more tests producing results is a welcome breath of fresh air.
Indian cricket has also set many precedents and among a few of them, you also have schools scheduling their exams based on the schedule of a match. If a match is being played on Indian grounds, then chances are that the stadium will be jam-packed. Indians are notorious for living for the moment. But the 'just like us' Pakistanis aren't; they are long on memory and firm on their objectives.
