Bladder cancer patients undergo these tests as many as four times a year. This test only requires a sample of urine on a test strip, making it a much less invasive way to monitor high-risk patients. Bladder cancer develops when a part of the bladder rapidly produces too many cells. These cells show out-of-control growth and can become cancer. Bladder cancer is likely to occur in men two to three times more than in women, and may occur in Caucasians twice as often as in African-Americans. Most occur after the age of 55, but some cases have been evident at younger ages.

Bladder cancers are further identified according to how they've spread. If the cancer is only found within in the bladder's lining, it's characterized as superficial cancer - while carcinomas that have spread to the bladder's muscle wall are referred to as invasive. Bladder cancer can occur at any age, but it is most common in people older than 50 years of age. The average age at the time of diagnosis is in the 60s. Bladder cancer characteristically causes blood in the urine; this may be visible to the naked eye (frank hematuria ) or detectable only by microscope (microscopic hematuria). Other possible symptoms include pain during urination , frequent urination (Polyuria ) or feeling the need to urinate without results.

Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer among men and the ninth most common cancer among women in the United State. In New York State, about 3,500 men and 1,300 women get cancer of the bladder each year. Bladder cancer is the rapid, uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the bladder. Cancer usually begins in the lining of the bladder (superficial bladder cancer). Bladder cancer has traditionally been graded on a 3-4 point scale where grade 1 signifies a low-aggressive cancer and grade 3-4 signifies a high-aggressive cancer. Grade 2 is intermediate.
